Vacation calculator
Calculate the vacation days you've accrued based on time worked. Enter your dates or period worked, your annual vacation allowance and the days you've already taken to get an estimate of accrued and remaining vacation.
Calculate your vacation
Enter your terms to get a proportional result.
The calculator prorates the annual allowance you enter. It does not automatically convert calendar days into working days.
How many vacation days are you entitled to?
How many vacation days you're entitled to depends on the terms that apply to your employment and the time you've worked during the relevant period.
If you know how many vacation days you're allocated per year, you can work out the proportional amount based on time worked. For example, if you haven't completed a full year yet, you'll have only accrued the portion corresponding to the months or days that have passed.
WorkIO's vacation calculator lets you enter your annual vacation days and the period worked to make this estimate automatically. If you've already taken some days, you can enter those too to find out roughly how many you have left.
How vacation is calculated
To calculate proportional vacation, you first need to know how many vacation days correspond to a full year under the terms that apply to you.
From that figure, you can work out the proportional amount for the time worked. If you've worked the whole annual period, you'd be entitled to the full amount configured. If you've only worked part of the year, the amount accrued will be proportional to that period.
The calculator does this automatically from the data you enter. The result is an estimate: your contract, collective agreement and other circumstances can affect the number of days or how they're counted.
Calendar days and working days
Vacation can be expressed in calendar days or working days, and the two systems count days differently.
Calendar days include every day on the calendar within the relevant period, while working days count only the days you'd normally be scheduled to work.
That's why it's best not to convert a number of calendar days into working days using an improvised equivalence. To use the calculator, select the system your vacation is expressed in and enter the annual figure for that same system.
The calculator uses that setting to make the estimate, but it doesn't determine which system applies to your particular situation.
How much vacation accrues per month worked?
A simple way to estimate accrued vacation is to divide your annual vacation days by the 12 months of the year.
For example, if you have 30 vacation days a year, the result is 30 ÷ 12 = 2.5 days per month; if your reference were 22 days a year, it would be 22 ÷ 12 ≈ 1.83 days per month.
This approximation is useful for understanding the calculation, but the calculator can use the period worked directly to give a more precise estimate without rounding the days accrued each month beforehand.
30 / 12 = 2,5
22 / 12 ≈ 1,83
Did you work partial months?
You don't need to round the time worked to whole months. Enter the real dates of the period and the calculator will estimate the vacation accrued during that interval.
Calculate my vacationCalculating vacation when you start partway through a year
If you start working after the year has already begun, you usually don't need to calculate it as if you'd worked the whole year. You can estimate the vacation that corresponds only to the period since you joined.
For example, if your annual vacation is set up for a full year but you start working several months after the period begins, the calculator can use your start date and the end date to estimate the proportional amount you've accrued.
This avoids having to manually convert the time worked into whole months, which is especially useful when you start or finish partway through a month.
Accrued, taken and remaining vacation
To find out how many vacation days you have left, it helps to distinguish between three concepts.
Accrued
What you've built up during the time worked.
Taken
The days you've already used.
Remaining
The difference between the two.
For example, if you've accrued 18 days during the period and already taken 7, that would leave 11 days remaining based on the figures entered.
The calculator does this automatically and shows the time worked, the vacation accrued, the vacation taken and the vacation remaining separately.
Calculation examples
These examples show how the amount of vacation accrued increases as the period worked goes on. Taking 30 annual days as a reference, a simple estimate would be:
30 days / year
3 months: 7.5 days
30 days / year
6 months: 15 days
30 days / year
9 months: 22.5 days
30 days / year
12 months: 30 days
These are illustrative examples to show the proportionality. You can enter your own dates and the annual figure that applies to you in the calculator to get a result adapted to your period.
Your time goes beyond vacation
Calculating your vacation is useful for finding out the days you've accrued. If you also want to keep a record of your workdays, hours worked and time spent working, you can do that with WorkIO.

Can I calculate my vacation if I haven't worked a full year? +
Yes. You don't need to have worked a full year to use the calculator. You can enter the actual dates of the period worked and the tool will estimate the proportional vacation accrued during that interval.
This is useful if you started working partway through the year, want to calculate it before the year ends, or simply need to know the vacation accrued up to a certain date.
Can I use the calculator if my employer gives a different number of vacation days? +
Yes. The annual vacation figure is configurable. Enter the number of days that applies to your situation and the calculator will use that figure as the reference for estimating the vacation accrued during the period worked.
This means the tool doesn't assume everyone has the same number of vacation days per year.
Can I calculate vacation between two specific dates? +
Yes. In the by-dates mode, you can enter a start date and an end date. The tool will calculate the period between them and use it to estimate the vacation accrued.
This mode is especially useful when the period doesn't line up exactly with whole months, for example if you started working partway through a month.
Can I deduct the vacation I've already taken? +
Yes. You can enter how many vacation days you've already taken. The calculator will take them into account when showing the result, so you can distinguish between vacation accrued, vacation used and vacation that would remain based on the figures entered.
This means you can use the tool both to estimate what you've accrued and to check how much is left after taking some of your vacation.
What happens if I enter more vacation taken than accrued? +
It's possible for the days taken you enter to be higher than the days accrued during the calculated period. In that case, the result should clearly show the difference without automatically interpreting what that means for your employment.
The calculator simply compares the figures entered. Whether such a situation is possible, or how it should be handled, depends on the terms that apply to your case.
Is the result from the vacation calculator legally binding? +
No. The result is an estimate based on the dates, annual vacation and other data you enter.
Actual terms may depend on your contract, collective agreement, work calendar or other applicable circumstances. Use the calculator as an aid and check the relevant documentation if you need to determine exactly how many days you're entitled to.
Do I need to register to calculate my vacation? +
No. You can use the vacation calculator directly from your browser without creating an account. Enter the period worked, your annual vacation days and, if relevant, the days you've already taken to get the estimate.
The calculator is designed as a standalone tool for making this calculation quickly. If you'd also like to keep an ongoing record of your shifts and hours worked, you can do that with WorkIO .
