How to calculate your hourly wage
To work out how much you earn per hour, you need to relate your gross salary to the number of working hours used as a reference.
The basic formula is: gross annual salary ÷ annual working hours = gross hourly wage.
For example, if your gross annual salary is €25,200 and you use 2,080 working hours a year as a reference, the result is €25,200 ÷ 2,080 h = €12.12/h.
The calculator does this conversion automatically from the salary, payments and schedule you enter. If you know the exact number of annual hours in your schedule, you can also enter it directly to use in the calculation.
Calculating a monthly salary per hour
If you're starting from a monthly salary, you first need to know your gross annual salary. To do that, multiply the amount of each payment by the number of payments you receive during the year.
For example, €1,800 × 12 payments is €21,600 gross a year, while €1,800 × 14 payments is €25,200 gross a year.
Once you have the annual salary, it's divided by the reference annual hours to work out the gross value of an hour.
The calculator does both steps automatically, so it's important to correctly indicate whether your monthly salary is paid in 12, 14 or a different number of payments.
Calculating an annual salary per hour
When you already know your gross annual salary, the calculation is more direct: divide that amount by the annual working hours used as a reference.
For example, €30,000 ÷ 1,760 h is €17.05/h.
The number of annual hours can vary depending on the schedule and the terms that apply, so the tool lets you enter a custom annual figure.
If you don't know your annual hours, you can use your weekly schedule as a reference to make an estimate.
How 12 or 14 payments affect the result
The number of payments matters when you enter a monthly salary, because it determines the gross annual salary used in the calculation.
Earning €1,800 a month in 12 payments means €1,800 × 12 = €21,600 a year, while earning €1,800 in 14 payments means €1,800 × 14 = €25,200 a year.
Even though the amount indicated for each payment is the same, the annual salary is different, and so is the value calculated per hour.
That's why the calculator asks for the number of payments when you start from a monthly salary.
Weekly hours and annual hours
To calculate the value of an hour, you need a reference for the time worked during the year.
A simple approximation can be obtained from your weekly schedule, but the actual number of annual hours doesn't always match a direct multiplication of weekly hours by 52 weeks.
If you know the annual hours in your schedule, you can enter them directly into the calculator. That figure will take priority over the estimate based on your weekly schedule.
This lets you adapt the calculation to situations where the annual hours are specifically defined.
How to calculate what you'll be paid for hours worked
If you already know your hourly rate, you can use the calculator's second mode to estimate how much corresponds to the time worked.
The formula is: hourly rate × time worked = estimated gross income.
For example, if your rate is €14/h and you've worked 37 hours and 30 minutes, the 30 minutes are first converted to half an hour (37 h 30 min = 37.5 h), then 37.5 h × €14/h = €525.
The calculator automatically converts hours and minutes and shows the estimated gross result.
Hourly wage example
Say you have a gross monthly salary of €1,800, receive 14 payments a year and use a 40-hour weekly schedule over 52 weeks as your reference.
First we calculate the annual salary (€1,800 × 14 = €25,200) and the reference annual hours (40 h × 52 = 2,080 h).
- Annual salary
- €25,200
- Annual hours
- 2,080 h
- Hourly wage
- €12.12/h
The result would be approximately €12.12 gross per hour. If you know a different annual hours figure, you can enter it directly to adapt the result.
Gross and net hourly wage
This calculator works with gross amounts. Gross salary is the figure before tax, social security contributions and any other deductions that may apply.
Net salary is the amount you actually receive after those deductions, and it can vary depending on personal, tax and employment circumstances.
For that reason, the result of this tool shouldn't be interpreted as an estimate of net hourly pay.
If you enter your salary, use the gross amount to keep it consistent with the calculation the tool performs.

What salary should I enter into the calculator? +
Enter your gross salary, meaning the amount before tax, social security contributions or other deductions.
If you know your monthly salary, select that option and also indicate how many payments you receive during the year. If you already know your gross annual salary directly, you can enter it without indicating payments.
Using the gross salary keeps a consistent basis for calculating the approximate value of an hour worked.
What if I don't know how many hours I work in a year? +
You can use your weekly schedule to make an estimate. The calculator will use those hours as a reference to work out an approximate annual figure.
If you later find out the exact annual hours in your schedule, you can enter them directly to get a result that's more closely adjusted to that reference.
Why does my hourly wage change when I adjust the annual hours? +
The hourly value is obtained by dividing the gross annual salary by the annual hours used as a reference.
If you keep the same salary but reduce the number of annual hours, the value calculated for each hour goes up. If you increase the annual hours, the hourly value goes down.
That's why it's important to use an hours reference that accurately represents your schedule.
Can I calculate what I'll be paid for hours and minutes? +
Yes. You don't need to convert the minutes to decimal format manually. Enter the hours and minutes worked separately and the calculator will do the conversion automatically.
For example, 7 hours and 30 minutes equal 7.5 hours for the calculation. If the rate is €15/h, the estimated gross result would be €112.50.
Can I use this calculator if I charge an hourly rate? +
Yes. Use the "How much will I earn?" mode and enter your hourly rate and the time worked directly.
In that case you don't need to indicate a monthly salary, annual salary or number of payments. The tool will multiply the rate you enter by the hours and minutes worked to show the estimated gross income.
If you regularly work with an hourly rate and want to record your actual shifts to keep an ongoing track, you can do that with WorkIO .
Does this calculator work out overtime? +
This tool can help you find out the value of a regular hour or calculate an amount from a known rate, but it doesn't automatically apply specific surcharges for overtime hours.
If you want to calculate overtime with a surcharge percentage or a set compensation, you can use WorkIO's overtime calculator.
Is this calculator suitable for self-employed people or freelancers? +
You can use it if you already know the rate you charge per hour and want to work out the amount for a given number of hours worked.
However, the tool doesn't determine what rate a self-employed person or freelancer should charge. Setting a professional rate usually also needs to take into account expenses, billable hours, taxes, margin and other factors this calculator doesn't include.
Do I need to register to use the calculator? +
No. You can calculate your hourly wage or estimate what you'll be paid directly from your browser without creating an account.
The tool is designed for one-off calculations. If you want to record your shifts, keep track of your hours worked and maintain an ongoing record of your time and income, you can use WorkIO .
