Overtime calculator

Calculate how much your overtime could be worth from your hourly rate or your salary. Enter the hours and minutes worked and apply the premium percentage that applies to get an estimated gross amount. You can also estimate its compensation as time off when that's the applicable option.

Calculate your overtime

Enter the ordinary hourly value, overtime worked and applicable premium.

Overtime premium

Select the premium that applies to your case. The calculator does not apply a universal legal percentage.

How to calculate overtime pay

To calculate the value of an overtime hour, you first need to know the value of an ordinary hour and then apply the premium that applies to your case.

The basic formula is: ordinary hourly value × (1 + premium percentage) = overtime hourly value.

For example, if an ordinary hour is worth €12.50 and you apply a 25% premium, the result is €12.50 × 1.25 = €15.63 per overtime hour.

You can then multiply that value by the number of overtime hours and minutes worked. The calculator lets you enter your hourly rate directly, or calculate it first from your salary.

How much is overtime paid?

There's no single premium percentage that can be applied universally to all overtime. The amount can depend on the terms set out in your collective agreement, contract, applicable agreement or on how those hours should be compensated.

For that reason, the calculator doesn't automatically impose a specific premium. You can select 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, or enter a custom percentage based on the reference that applies to your case.

The result should be interpreted as an estimate based on the data you enter, not as an automatic determination of how much you should be paid.

Calculating overtime from your salary

If you don't know the value of your ordinary hour, you can work it out from your salary before calculating overtime.

The calculator reuses the same approach as the hourly wage calculator: it first converts your gross annual salary into an hourly value using the reference annual hours.

Once the ordinary hourly value is calculated, the premium percentage you indicated is applied, and finally it's multiplied by the overtime worked. For example, with an ordinary hourly value of €12.50/h and a 50% premium, each overtime hour is worth €18.75/h; if you've worked 4 overtime hours, the result is €18.75 × 4 = €75 estimated gross.

Overtime and compensatory time off

Overtime doesn't always have to be expressed only as a monetary amount. In certain cases it can be compensated with time off under the applicable terms.

The calculator lets you turn on this option and enter the ratio you want to use. For example, if each overtime hour is compensated with 1.5 hours off, 2 overtime hours × 1.5 = 3 hours off.

The tool simply performs that conversion. It doesn't determine which ratio should legally apply, or whether in your specific case the hours should be paid or compensated with time off.

Overtime calculation example

Say your ordinary hour is worth €12.50, you've worked 6 hours and 30 minutes of overtime, and you apply a 0% premium.

First we convert the time: 6 h 30 min = 6.5 h.

Ordinary hourly value
€12.50/h
Premium applied
0%
Overtime hourly value
€12.50/h
Overtime worked
6.5 h
Estimated amount
€81.25

The result would be approximately €81.25 gross. If you change the premium percentage, the calculator will automatically update both the overtime hourly value and the total amount.

How to calculate overtime hours and minutes

Overtime minutes are converted into a fraction of an hour before applying the relevant rate.

So 2 hours and 30 minutes equal 2.5 hours for the pay calculation.

You don't need to do this conversion manually: enter hours and minutes separately and the calculator will do it automatically.

30 min = 0.5 h

15 min = 0.25 h

45 min = 0.75 h

Frequently asked questions

What premium percentage should I enter? +

Enter the percentage that applies to the terms in your case. The calculator offers several common values as shortcuts, but none of them is automatically considered the correct percentage for all overtime.

If you have a different reference in your collective agreement, contract or agreement, you can use the custom option and enter that percentage.

What if my overtime doesn't have a premium? +

You can select a 0% premium. In that case, the calculator will use the same value as the ordinary hour to estimate the overtime amount.

For example, if your ordinary hour is worth €15 and you work 3 overtime hours with a 0% premium, the estimated result will be €45 gross.

Can I calculate overtime if I don't know what my hour is worth? +

Yes. You can switch to the calculate-from-salary mode and enter your gross salary, number of payments and reference hours.

The tool will first calculate the approximate value of your ordinary hour and use that result as the basis for then applying the premium and the overtime worked.

If you'd also like to keep an ongoing record of the regular and overtime hours you work, WorkIO lets you track that as part of your shifts.

Can I enter a premium other than 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%? +

Yes. The percentages shown as buttons are just shortcuts.

If you need to use any other premium, select the custom option and enter the percentage you want to apply. The calculator will automatically update the overtime hourly value and the total amount.

What if I only work a few extra minutes? +

You can enter minutes even if you haven't completed a full overtime hour.

The calculator automatically converts the minutes into the corresponding fraction of an hour. For example, 30 minutes equal 0.5 hours and 15 minutes equal 0.25 hours, so the calculation can be precise even when the overtime is less than an hour.

Can I calculate only the compensatory time off? +

Yes. Turn on the time-off compensation option and enter the ratio you want to use between an overtime hour and time off.

The tool will calculate the resulting time off based on that ratio. This doesn't mean that ratio is mandatory or applies to every case; the calculator only uses the value you enter.

Does the result show exactly how much I should be paid? +

No. The result is an estimate based on the hourly value, the premium percentage and the overtime you enter.

How overtime should actually be paid or compensated can depend on employment terms and applicable rules that the calculator doesn't automatically interpret. Use the result as an aid for making the calculation, not as a legal determination of the amount owed.

Do I need to register to use the overtime calculator? +

No. You can make the calculation directly from your browser without creating an account.

Enter the value of your hour, or calculate that value from your salary, add the overtime worked and the applicable premium, and you'll get the result immediately.
